What Every Woman Feeling the Impact of Aging and Struggling to Exercise and move more needs to know…

The first thing is you need to know you are not alone! 86% of women do not exercise and move enough.

Congratulations if you are part of the 14% that are exercising and moving and meeting the recommended guidelines. For the rest... :)

Let's start with, what are the physical activity recommendations?

  • 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate-intensity
  • 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous-intensity
  •  Or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous activities.

Part of the recommended guidelines includes at least 2 days each week of muscle-strengthening activities.

78% of women do not meet these muscle-strengthening guidelines. At some point the lack of movement, exercise and aging will catch up with each and every one of us.

It starts with acknowledging what you are noticing and experiencing. Where are you right now?

Peta's personal story

In my mid-forties I noticed I was needing to have a nap in the afternoon - I felt tired and had no idea why. As someone who had a lot of energy up until this, it was quite a shock. After some research, I discovered it was menopause and I knew I needed to exercise and in particular strength training.

I also needed to acknowledge this was part of the aging process and how it was already starting to impact my life.

When I hit 60 I was noticing little niggles in my joints, so started with you gals and by 61 was feeling fabulous and strong, last year was basically wiped out with a weird middle ear thing. This has passed and I’m ready to feel 61 again. I’m so looking forward to getting fit and strong again.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • When did you start noticing or experiencing the impact of aging?
  • Acknowledge life has shifted for you.
  • Notice the small changes.
  • Understand how long this has been happening.
  • What does this look and feel like for you?
  • What differences are you experiencing?
  • Be specific about what you notice.
  • What can’t you do that you could do.
  • How is it impacting life (every day life and fun stuff)
  •  Imagine what life will be like in 10 or 20 years time.

What to know

  1. You are not alone in experiencing the impact of aging, it happens to all of us. Some are just better at it than others.
  2. Acknowledge what you can and can’t do and the impact this is having on your life.
  3.  #1 thing you can do is start exercising and moving more.

Physical activity and exercise countermeasures aging:

  • Improves heart and lung health,
  • Good for the brain, bones, muscles and mood
  • Keeps you healthier for longer
  • Delay up to 40 different chronic conditions or diseases
  • Wards off cognitive decline
  • Reduce the risk of falls
  • Helps you live longer
  • Builds confidence and increases energy
